Physical Education
Department Overview
Department of Physical Education is a part of the College of Education in Shaqlawa. Graduates become teachers of physical education for public and private schools in the Shaqlawa area and surrounding regions. The department aims to elevate the professional level of those working in the field of physical education and to familiarize them with scientific and educational developments in the field.
Establishment: The Department of Physical Education was established on 6/2/2018. Up to the year 2025, the department has had three graduating classes. Many graduates are now employed either full-time, on contract, or as lecturers. Some are currently part of the teaching staff in the department.
Quality and Contribution: Since its establishment, strong emphasis has been placed on the quality of teaching and education. Therefore, graduates of this department have consistently been individuals full of knowledge and equipped with proper and advanced education in their field, contributing significantly to the community and the region. Several symposiums and workshops have also been conducted.

Mission and Vision
- Striving: To prepare advanced, specialized physical education professionals in the fields of sports, sports science, physical development, as well as educational and social dimensions.
- Promoting Physical Activity: Working to promote physical activity across all government sectors based on community needs and in coordination with relevant parties such as the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Olympic Committee.
- Sports Awareness: Participating in spreading sports awareness and promoting sports as a vital tool to bring communities closer together.
- Scientific Research: Advancing scientific research in the field of physical education and guiding development in accordance with community needs.
- Higher Education: Offering higher education to grant diploma, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
- College Establishment: Establishing an international-level college with sports halls and stadiums dedicated to the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences to serve the region at a high standard.

- Sports Institutes: A strong partner to sports institutes by upgrading the degrees of their graduates from diplomas to bachelor's degrees through enrollment in our department. It also supports the educational sector (public and private) by providing specialized physical education teachers for schools.
- Community and Families: A partner in improving student education to enhance individual thinking and behavior within both society and families.
- Scientific and Cultural Contribution: A supporter of national academic and cultural progress through producing a large number of researchers in sports and education.
- Media and Administration: A collaborator with media and administrative organizations by supplying expert and specialized physical education staff, fulfilling a critical need for these institutions.
Ungraduated Study
Bachelor's Program Structure: The Bachelor's study program in the Department of Physical Education is structured to prepare students to become specialized sports teachers. Over the course of eight semesters (four years), students study various subjects relevant to the profession. They gain knowledge in the following fields:
- Practical Field: Subjects include: Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Fencing, Track and Field, Swimming, Teaching Methods, etc.
- Theoretical Field: Subjects include: Exercise Physiology, Sports Training, Measurement and Evaluation, Scientific Research, Psychology, Sports Medicine, Anatomy, etc.
- Computer Field: Students learn the basics of computers and software needed for teaching work.
- Second Language: Students take one English

Admissions
Admission Requirements (Kurdish Language Track):
- High School Completion: The student must have successfully completed the 12th grade with a good grade.
- Physical Fitness: The student must be physically fit or show strong interest in physical activity.
- Application Process: The student must submit the application form via the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research through either Zankoline or the Parallel system.
- General Requirements: The student must meet the general admission conditions set by universities and institutes in the Kurdistan Region.
- Fitness & Medical Exam: The student must pass both the physical fitness and medical examination.
Alumni
Graduation Summary: Until the academic year (2024-2025), the Department of Physical Education had 3 graduating classes. In each class, more than 25 students received their Bachelor's degrees.

Academic Advising
Department of Physical Education
The academic staff of the Department of Physical Education consists of 18 instructors, including 6 assistant professors, 8 lecturers, 2 assistant lecturers, and 2 Master's degree holders.
In addition to teaching, the instructors always serve as academic advisors, aiming to guide students, emphasize the importance of learning, and develop their physical and athletic abilities.
They also encourage students to behave appropriately in social settings both inside and outside the department.
Furthermore, students are continuously supported in enhancing their overall abilities, and they are consistently guided by instructors in finding suitable job opportunities.

The Department of Physical Education provides internship opportunities for students in the field of sports education, enabling them to work in real-world environments in the future—such as schools, sports clubs, or community engagement programs.
Through these opportunities, students can apply their skills and knowledge in areas such as teaching physical education, coaching sports teams, and organizing physical activity programs.
At the same time, they develop essential professional competencies. They also build self-confidence and establish meaningful connections within their field.
Furthermore, they gain the ability to enhance their CVs and be well-prepared for the job market in the sports sector.
